Johns Hopkins Scientists Find Potential Genetic Biomarker for Immunotherapy Response

In a small study of 48 patients with colon and other cancers for whom standard therapies failed, researchers at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center say that mistakes in so-called mismatch repair genes, first identified by Johns Hopkins and other scientists two decades ago, may accurately predict who will respond to certain immunotherapy drugs known as PD-1 inhibitors. Such drugs aim to disarm systems developed by cancer cells to evade detection and destruction by immune system cells.

Fourth Annual Charm City Strongwoman Contest

Save the date for one of the most original and unique fundraisers. The Fourth Annual Charm City Strongwoman Contest will be held on Sunday, September 13, 2015 from 9am – 5pm on Eden Street between Aliceanna and Fleet Street, just outside the Fivex3 Training gym in Baltimore, MD. This event gets bigger each year and this year promises to be another very intense competition.

Good News... A newer option for Colon Cancer Screening

Cologuard is a noninvasive test for colon cancer screening that identifies altered DNA and/or blood in your stool, which is associated with the possibility of colon cancer or precancer. Approved by the FDA in August of 2014, Cologuard was developed by Exact Sciences, in collaboration with researchers at Mayo Clinic. In a study of 10,000 people of average risk for colon cancer, Cologuard found 92% of cancer. Cologuard does produce false-positive results. In the clinical study, 13% of people without cancer or precancer tested positive. Cologuard must be ordered by a physician, and any positive result should be discussed with your doctor and be followed by a diagnostic colonoscopy.

XBiotech Prepares for Phase 3 Trial of XilonixTM

XBiotech announced a Phase III study named, Xilonix™ Colorectal cancer Immunotherapy Treatment Evaluation ("XCITE"), to assesses XBiotech's True Human™ monoclonal antibody (Xilonix™) for the treatment of metastatic colon cancer. Total enrollment is expected to consist of 600 patients. The primary objective of the XCITE trial is to assess the ability of Xilonix™ to improve the overall survival in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer who have failed standard therapies.

The Susie's Cause affiliate in North Carolina is holding their Fourth Annual Blue Ribbon Run to raise awareness and support colon cancer research. The 5K Run and 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2015 in Wilmington NC. This annual event is a great way to support the Foundation and have a good time too!

Tulane University Research Survey

Tulane University is conducting an online survey of individuals with cancer histories. They are particularly interested in individuals with a history of colorectal cancer. The survey takes about 10 minutes and asks about people’s healthcare preferences, demographics, and health history. It also presents some recent research findings that may be relevant to patients. They hope that the study will build knowledge that can help individuals with cancer to be more satisfied with their care.

We are excited that we are able to make the Health Festival at Mondawmin Mall an annual event. So mark your calendars for the next Health Festival at Mondawmin Mall to be held on Saturday, March 21, 2015 from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Health Festival focuses on the under-served community where statistically colon cancer diagnosis and death rates are alarmingly high.

Charlotte's Story

Charlotte Bohn is a wife and mother of two young children and a colon cancer survivor. Her fight against this horrible disease almost overwhelmed her but now through her music she is not only thriving but working to support Susie's Cause. New Colon Cancer Vaccine Clinical Trial is Underway

Supported by the Susan Cohan Colon Cancer Foundation (“Susie’s Cause”) through a generous contribution of $750,000 from the family of Dr. Bozhong Zhang, Mr. Chen Zhang, and Ms. Li Yuan, the Kimmel Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins has launched an exciting cutting edge colon cancer vaccine research program. This clinical research program is further testing vaccine-based immunotherapies in combination with DNA hypomethylating agents as new ways to treat colorectal cancer. The funds that the Susan Cohan Colon Cancer Foundation and the Zhang family contributed are being used to support the production of a new clinical lot of the vaccine at Johns Hopkins’ Cell and Gene Therapy Facility.

Susie's Cause Announces Second Major Gift to Johns Hopkins For Vaccine Trials

The Susan Cohan Colon Cancer Foundation (“Susie’s Cause”) recently received a second generous contribution of $250,000 from the family of Mr. Chen Zhang, Dr. Bozhong Zhang, and Li Yuan that is allowing the launch of an exciting cutting edge colon cancer vaccine research program at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins. The announcement was made by David Rodman Cohan, the volunteer President of Susie’s Cause.

Susie's Cause Announces Major Gift for Cancer Research

Susie's Cause volunteer President David Cohan took the opportunity of the annual 5K Run & Family Walk to announce that the Susan Cohan Colon Cancer Foundation and the Zhang Family have made a significant gift to Johns Hopkins Hospital to further research on colon cancer. Mr. Cohan presented a check for $250,000 to Lei Zheng, M.D., Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Oncology and Surgery at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center. The funds will help support a clinical research program that will test vaccine-based immunotherapy and DNA hypomethylating agents as new ways to treat colorectal cancer.

New Board Member Announced

Giving Back

Marie Cardona became acquainted with Susie’s Cause in 2005 and is the founder of the West Coast affiliate of the The Susan Cohan Colon Cancer Foundation. An avid photographer, she is donating all profits from the sale of her photographs to Susie's Cause in honor of her late mother, Susan Therese Muravez Cardona, who died of colon cancer at age 35 in 1994. You can see her beautiful photos in our Shop section.
