2nd Annual Free "DMV" Outreach Health Festival

An estimated crowd of 1,379 people attended our 2nd Annual Free "DMV" Outreach Health Festival on Saturday, November 11, at Beltway Plaza Mall in Greenbelt, Maryland. Heartfelt thanks to our festival partners at Adventist HealthCare and Doctors Community Hospital and to all the other participating agencies and groups for making our final festival of 2017 a great day of colorectal cancer and overall health and wellness awareness and education.

Adventist HealthCare had wonderful colorectal cancer education and digestive health information, and we thank Ana Cruz for being an incredible liaison on behalf of the organization. Throughout the day, festival attendees were able to ask the health care professionals from Adventist their important health questions, while Faline Rojas took to the festival stage to share messages about colon cancer in Spanish.

Susie's Cause was thrilled to learn that Adventist can provide low-cost-to no-cost colonoscopies to Montgomery County residents!

Kelvin Martin of Doctors Community Hospital graciously arranged for theĀ  organization's Wellness on Wheels mobile clinic to be on site at the festival, right out front in the parking lot. In the clinic, the dynamic duo of Eugene and Sasha provided screenings for blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol, sharing results with visitors in just 15 minutes.

While they stayed busy outside, Susie's Cause was honored to share information at our table inside about Doctors Community Hospital's Cancer Prevention, Education, Screening and Treatment (CPEST) program, which provides low-cost-to-no-cost colonoscopies and other cancer screenings to Prince George's County residents.

Staff from the Prince George's County Department of Parks and Recreation talked up the agency's local health programs during the festival and spent time interacting with the children who were in attendance, promoting fitness through interactive games, with prizes for participation.

Giant Food handed out children's giveaways, copies of its Savory magazine loaded with great recipes, and yummy baked goods. Many thanks to store manager Scott Simms and Kandi, who staffed the table.

Staff from Planet Fitness, its table decked out in purple, promoted fitness and handed out giveaways to attendees during the day.

Many thanks to Elshaday Teferi for staffing the Susie's Cause table in the mall's center court, where she educated passers-by about the importance of colorectal cancer screenings and directed them to our festival area.

Our own Ralph Magwood did another fabulous job recruiting diverse talent for the festival, opening and closing the festivities with his powerful rendition of "America the Beautiful" and singing some wonderful classics throughout the day. Everyone enjoyed the additional dynamic entertainment from Pakiva Bluz, The Interfuzion Band, Larzine Talley, and the energizing Grupo Quimbao Latin band.

The kids loved the free face painting by LW Arts and Design!

Susie's Cause is grateful to Beltway Plaza Mall, its marketing director Janubi Devendra, and its security team for helping to make the day a success. The mall was once again the perfect location to connect with the community and provide education about the importance of early screening for colon cancer and a healthy lifestyle.

Thank you, Greenbelt! We had a great time sharing another healthy day with you!
