Held Saturday, October 21, at Southland Mall in Hayward, California, our 2nd Annual Susie's Cause Free Hayward Outreach Health Festival presented an estimated 1,956 people with free health screenings, colorectal cancer education and resources, face painting, live entertainment, and more.

Kaiser Permanente served as our co-host and presenting sponsor for the festival, and its team's collaborative spirit and dedication were impressive and inspiring.

Kimberley Cunha, public affairs manager for Kaiser Permanente, was a festival superstar, sparing no detail toward making her organization and the event as a whole shine. Evelyn Navarro, public affairs representative for Kaiser Permanente, was another festival star, providing essential outreach to local agencies and critical behind-the-scenes organization.

Dr. Akhil Wadhera did a fantastic job of welcoming the crowd to our event and emphasizing the importance of getting screened for colorectal and other cancers and of overall healthy living. Juana Gonzalez, Stella Chan, Paul Koch, and Tammy Goldstein also contributed indispensable work "behind the scenes" on behalf of Kaiser Permanente that made the festival a success.

During the festival, Kaiser Permanente provided:

• blood pressure screenings to KP members
• appointment scheduling for mammograms and FIT kits
• free flu vaccines for everyone
• free HPV vaccines for KP members
• Institute of Health & Healing, promoting colorectal cancer, breast cancer, HPV, and smoking cessation, HEAL (Healthy Eating Active Living), and educational models
• "Ask the medical professional"
• health Jeopardy educational game
• Bras for a Cause display
• A Pledge to Health, to improve one's health with the lunch bag incentive
• opportunities to ask a representative questions about Shop KP, Medi-Cal, and Senior Advantage
• translators speaking in multiple languages to better interact with the diversity of festival-goers
• a fitness challenge game, with rewards, that was a particular hit with the younger festival attendees

Festival-goers loved the beautiful Kaiser Permanente bags and the mall certificate raffles that occurred every hour. The giant inflatable "Strollin' Colon" in the middle of the festivities was a fabulous educational resource and great attention-drawing tool.

Festival attendees also enjoyed the yoga demonstration by My Peak Fitness and the musical performances by Side Note a cappella group, flamenco guitarist David McLean, and Susie's Cause's very own vocalist Ralph Magwood, capped off by the Latin/salsa stylings of Patricio Angulo & The Sonando Project. Drea Lusion, the very talented face painter, had a line all day.

Thank you, Hayward! We had a great time sharing another health day with you!
