2nd Annual Free Louisville Outreach Health Festival

Jala Logo

An estimated crowd of 1,516 joined us, our phenomenal co-hosts from Norton Healthcare Prevention & Wellness, and a stellar group of other local agencies at Jefferson Mall in Louisville, Kentucky on Saturday, September 16, for a great day of colorectal cancer and general health education.

John Renfrow from Norton was an absolute super star, assembling a great festival team that not only offered excellent colon cancer education and FIT kits but also scheduled a couple colonoscopy screening appointments with festival attendees. The screenings for blood pressure, glucose, and body mass index serviced a steady flow of attendees, who also received education on nutrition and the effects of smoking.

Special thanks go to Janet Farfan for serving as our Spanish translator, conducting wonderful hourly colon cancer announcements, and speaking with many families throughout the day. Heidi Mack, meanwhile, educated more than 620 people as they toured the giant inflatable colon.

Virginia Bradford, Louisville's caring cancer advocate, reached out to many attendees and was an awesome liaison to many of the health agencies represented. She had great displays set up on behalf of the Kentucky Cancer Program, Kentucky African Americans Against Cancer, and KYANNA Black Nurses Association.

WAVE 3 television anchor Dawne Gee was in the house to kick off the event and   was awesome, as always.

The Jefferson County Cooperative Extension, a program of the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, served some delicious healthy snacks, highlighted by "tailgate" caviar and frozen grapes. Festival-goers loved the recipes, educational materials, and aprons. Thanks to Valerie Holland.

Karen Lovely of Gilda's Club Louisville did a fabulous job promoting her organization's services.

Surgery on Sunday had an impressive group of pre-med students, recruited as volunteers by Jordan Licata, at its table to share information about the organization, which earlier this year received an 80% by 2018 National Achievement Award from the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable.

Colon Cancer Prevention Project was also in the house, with Amanda Smart handing out great educational materials.

Friend for Life Cancer Support Network offered wonderful resources, Passport Health Plan discussed insurance needs with attendees, and the Louisville League of Mascots team put smiles on everyone's faces as they strolled through the festival. Special thanks to Karl La Greca.

Donnie Mack and Ralph Magwood did a fabulous job recruiting diverse talent for the day. Everyone enjoyed the dynamic entertainment and Zumba demonstrations and loved the free face painting. Many thanks to Jefferson Mall, which, once again, was a perfect location for the festival.

Thank you, Louisville! We had a great time sharing another healthy day with you!
